Fine, I'm weighing in.
Twilight.Yeah, I read it. I hated it.
It seems that people are giving the two lead actors flak for not being diehard fans of the books and movies. I don't blame the actors for doing a movie they don't enjoy. Actors, especially young ones, don't always get to pick and choose what movies they get to do. If I am not mistaken, often you see contracts between high-level actors and studios forcing actors to do a certain number of films in a certain period. These two incite a decent teeny-bopper following, so it would only make sense to have teeny-bopper-magnet actors do a teeny-bopper-magnet movie. From a marketing standpoint it makes perfect sense. It's not like the actors can snub the studios oh so easily.
I've been trying to avoid getting into the twilight fiasco, mostly for fear of retaliation from the rabid fans. Too often I've seen people torn apart from disastrously structured arguments filled with straw men and logic faults the likes of which the grand canyon would be envious of. Not to mention, ReAlLy BaD CaPiTaLiZaTiOn HaBiTs!!!!!!1111!eleven... -_-. I didn't want a piece of it until now.
The book sucked. The characters were flat, the plot was bare thin, and the language had me wanting to hand the author a thesaurus. I'd have to say that the characters had me ripping out my hair the most. It is the most unrealistic, unhealthy portrayal of social interaction I've ever seen. If I were to climb up a tree and watch my girlfriend sleep from outside my window, I'd be arrested as a peeping tom, and rightfully so - not to mention being tagged as quite a creeper - again, rightfully so. You know that if these two were real people, you'd see Bella in a battered woman's shelter with track marks on her arms, bags under her eyes, bruised and beaten within 2 years. It's just sad. I'm no feminist (I'm a believer in sexual equality, and experience has lead me to believe that feminism doesn't always strive for that) but despite that, this book makes me want to vomit on a feminist basis.
Now my biggest problem is the rabid fanbase. I've gotten into seemingly friendly debates about this book series. Many have been civil, but several have been vile. I've been shouted at, screamed at, and even had something thrown at me.
"IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT, DON'T READ IT!"... How the hell am I supposed to know if I like it if I don't read it? Am I supposed to put my hand on the book and divine if its enjoyable or not?
"LEAVE MEYERS ALONE!". I think it's understandable that a creative person doesn't take criticism well. It is a shame because people should always be open to ways to improve their work, but its still understandable. No one wants to see their work torn apart. However, if a fan of an author, not a close friend or family member, but just a fan, takes this massive umbrage on behalf of this person that they decide to throw something at me? Something is a little off.
Hell - I'm a Star Trek fan. I'm sure that some people who have come here and see what I do with my spare time would label me as obsessive - even fetish-embracing. I'm okay with that. If someone says "I don't like Star Trek" I can understand that. I'll ask "Why not?" if they answer with thought out explanations so much the better. Will I try to clarify mistakes if they make any? yes. Will I offer another way to look at it? yes. Will I stand there, throwing rocks at them screaming "LEAVE GENE RODDENBERRY ALONE!!!!!" hell no.
In closing: the book sucked, and people need to stop taking it so seriously.
